At the very least, this could be a better option than Jake Haener.

The New York Giants have traded a fifth-round draft pick to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for 2024 first-round quarterback J.J. McCarthy. McCarthy, 23, has struggled thus far in his young career, requiring surgery on his meniscus in his rookie season which caused him to miss the entire 2024 campaign. Upon his return, he had a concerning 11/12 touchdown/interception ratio in 2025, going 6-4 in the process and battling more injuries throughout the year.

“Agent 9” was listed as the Vikings third string quarterback before preseason play began this year behind the newly acquired Kyler Murray and reliable backup Carson Wentz, effectively ending his chances of taking snaps for Minnesota this season.

McCarthy will look to have a fresh start on a New York squad that’s been utterly decimated with injuries three weeks into the regular season and the performance of backup quarterback Jameis Winston has done little to draw inspiration from the fanbase following Jaxson Dart’s season-ending knee injury. McCarthy will undoubtedly be tested on the field at some point this year, although Winston has the benefit of the g-men’s next four opponents having a combined record of 3-9.

In the aftermath of the news, it was also announced that the Giants released former Saints QB (and previously mentioned) Jake Haener from their active roster.
