Daboll is Down For the Count; Kafka to Serve as Interim Head Coach

Brian Daboll has officially been let go as the head coach of the New York Giants. On January 7th of this year, owner John Mara warned his staff that he had “just about run out of patience” with his team’s bottom-of-the-barrel status over the last two and a half seasons and today, on November 10th, the well has officially run dry.

Brian Daboll was hired as the head coach of the Giants back in January of 2022 as part of a series of sweeping changes after the fallout of the Gettleman-Shurmur/Judge era in East Rutherford. In his first season with the team, Daboll seemingly saved the franchise from the obscurity it had dealt with throughout most of the 2010’s, leading the G-Men to their first winning record and playoff appearance since 2016 as well as their first playoff victory since Super Bowl XLVI in 2011.

Despite a constantly improving roster thanks to fellow Buffalo Bills assistant and current Giants general manager Joe Schoen, Daboll was incapable of replicating his year one success, compiling a record of 11-33 since the start of 2023. In that timeframe, Daboll has overseen some of the worst memories for Giants fans in franchise history (and no, that’s not an overstatement). These include:

  • The immediate regression and subsequent scapegoating of Daniel Jones, who is now 8-2 as the starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts
  • The release of Saquon Barkley, who last season was told he was free to sign wherever he wanted without any incentive on the Giants end; he would end up winning the 2024 rushing title and Super Bowl LIX with the Philadelphia Eagles
  • A 3-14 season, the worst in franchise history, while the team was celebrating its 100th season of existence
  • The mishandling of high-profile draft picks including Evan Neal, Jalin Hyatt, and Deonte Banks
  • Has seen his prodigy rookie quarterback (Jaxson Dart) get evaluated for a concussion four times in seven career starts
  • His most recent offense, that being the four double-digit fourth quarter leads that the Giants have blown in the 2025 season, including their latest one yesterday at the hands of the Chicago Bears

The Giants will continue to search for their next great head coach since the ‘resignation’ of Tom Coughlin back in January of 2016. In the meantime, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, who was also brought in in 2022, will receive the largest promotion of his life as he will serve as the interim head coach for Big Blue for at least the remainder of the 2025 campaign. Kafka will have an uphill battle resembling the side of a cliff to keep said position however, as Mara may be looking to clean the entirety of the current regime; with the exception of Joe Schoen.
