Giants Fall in Kafka’s Coaching Debut; Lose Fifth Straight

Despite a new, more aggressive approach under interim head coach Mike Kafka, the New York Giants surrendered yet another late fourth quarter lead that they couldn’t recapture as they lost to the Green Bay Packers 27-20.

Despite the final score, there was no shortage of positives to take away from this one. For starters, the running combination of Devin Singletary and Tyrone Tracy had an excellent showing for the G-Men, as they combined for 186 yards from scrimmage as well as two touchdowns from Singletary in what could be considered the Giants’ best game on the ground since Cam Skattebo’s three score output in week 6 against the Philadelphia Eagles; which as of today is still the last time Big Blue won a game.

Quarterback Jameis Winston also looked as competent as one could ask for until the Giants’ last few plays (and we’ll get to that). ‘Famous’ Jameis went 19/29 with 201 yards, a rushing touchdown, and an interception. Winston himself was pleased to get the opportunity to start in Jaxson Dart’s absence this week and commandeer a Giants offense that has continued to fight despite its depleted state.

“So grateful, man. I was so grateful. I really wanted to win for these guys, man” said Winston in the postgame presser. “How we dominated the line of scrimmage, we ran the ball effectively. We did some good things in the passing game.”

One aspect of the passing game that stood out perhaps more than any other was the return of wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins, who in his return to New York hauled in 5 receptions for 57 yards, which both led the team.

On the defensive side, it appeared to be more of the same from defensive Shane Bowen’s underachieving unit. Despite an early injury to star Packers running back Josh Jacobs, Big Blue was unable to put any pressure on his replacement, Emmanuel Wilson, who waltzed in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Despite a somewhat solid output from the Giants’ pass defense, mostly due to eight quarterback hits with four coming from Brian Burns alone, Jordan Love was able to connect on two game-altering completions to Savion Williams for 33 yards in a tight window and Christian Watson while he was triple covered in the end zone for the game’s final score. When asked if he was confident the Giants were going to get a stop on the Packers while up 20-19, Brian Burns simply said “Yeah.”

Very telling of where this unit’s mindset is at.

The Giants have now surrendered and failed to regain a lead in six contests so far this season, and most of those came by the defense allowing scores late in the fourth quarter of game.

The Giants did have an opportunity to score with four minutes left, and after orchestrating what was turning into an excellent drive by the offense, Winston threw an interception in the end zone to Evan Williams from the Packers’ 18-yard line after Giants receiver Jalin Hyatt failed to finish off his corner route, sealing the game.

The General Consensus

We’ve said more than enough about Shane Bowen and his kindergarten-level defensive scheming. He’s pathetic, and the way he’s butchering such a talented defense should be criminally punishable, but at this point we expect that and it won’t change until Joe Schoen finally lets him go. This loss falls at the feet of Hyatt. In the most important moment of the game where you know in all likelihood you’re going to get a look from Winston on an endzone route, you need to pay attention in the huddle to exactly what that route is. His track record doesn’t allow him to make mistakes in massive moments like that, and Schoen will in all likelihood cut him in the offseason as he will be remembered as nothing more than one of the Giants GM’s biggest draft day mistakes.
