Five Things We Learned From the Giants’ Win at Buffalo

Football is officially back on our television screens, as is Giants Fare to your computer. The New York Giants started the preseason with a bang yesterday, defeating their upstate foes the Buffalo Bills 34-25 at Highmark Stadium. Today, we look at five key pieces of information we learned from this promising overall showing.

Abdul Carter will be an Instant Superstar

Yes, we know he only played in three pass rush snaps, but he was dominant in all of them. The first round pass rusher out of Penn State put massive pressure on Bills quarterback Mitch Trubisky on all three of those plays and displayed veteran-level evasiveness in terms of escaping the grasp of the offensive line, forcing Trubisky to step up in the pocket multiple times. It’s currently unknown how much playing time Carter will receive next week against the Jets, but he left Giants fans with maximum anticipation from minimum playing time. He’ll be fun to watch come September.

There may not be a group of signal callers all on the same team with this much notoriety in NFL history. Russell Wilson may have shown his age on his one and only offensive drive yesterday, but he also demonstrated expert level game management, completing 6 of 7 passes for 28 yards while leading New York to a field goal in their first possession of the preseason. Dart absolutely shined in his relief, completing 12 of 19 throws for 154 yards, including a spectacular 29 yard floater to Lil’Jordan Humphrey for his first technical touchdown in the big leagues. Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito played perfect mop up duty in the second half, going a combined 17 of 25 with 135 yards and two touchdowns (one apiece). All in all, every QB played up to their expectations, leaving the Big Blue faithful confident in whoever may need to be the ‘next man up’ for Wilson this season if need be.

Turbo Miller Deserves a Shot to Play in the Regular Season

You just love to see a complete unknown get their chance in the NFL, and running back Dante ‘Turbo’ MIller is no different. The undrafted second-year running back out of South Carolina, who was plagued with eligibility issues during his last two years of college, made the most of what could’ve been his only opportunity to make the 53-man roster yesterday. While not overly impressive in the run game (10 carries for 22 yards), he showed massive promise in the passing game, hauling in seven receptions for 80 yards and leading the team in both categories by a country mile. With Skattebo nursing a leg injury, it’ll be fun to watch Miller get another chance to grab a brass ring in the ‘Metlife Bowl’ against the Jets next week.

Deonte Banks Might Turn the Ship Around

Thank God. The third year cornerback out of Maryland played the entire first half in Buffalo and performed well in place of injured CB’s Cor’Dale Flott and Tre Hawkins. Banks allowed zero receptions on the three passes thrown in his direction on man coverage yesterday. He also finished the game with two tackles and is now in the driver’s seat to play CB2 behind Paulson Adebo. After struggling mightily in 2024, we hope this means the Banks may once again be closed on Sundays.

Jalin Hyatt may be Done in the Big Apple

This one truly is a shame. Hyatt looked like a massive deep ball threat coming out of Tennessee in the 2023 NFL Draft, but has failed to live up to the hype outside of one 100 yard performance in a game against New England in his rookie season. Hyatt played in zero snaps in yesterday’s victory as Lil’Jordan Humphrey caught a spectacular touchdown from Jaxson Dart in his absence. If Hyatt doesn’t make the roster in the coming weeks, we certainly hope he can find success elsewhere.

The Final Word

All-in-all, the offense looked fantastic at almost every level. Although the run game might be the big question mark heading into the week, every other level played well. Carter and Dart especially played like first round picks should as the future of New York might be brighter than most official power rankings would lead you to believe.
