DeVito the Only No-Brainer in a Cavalcade of Questionable Cuts

It would seem that ‘Black Tuesday has inevitably arrived for the New York Giants after a series of preseason hopefuls hit the necessary waivers that have brought the team down to the required 53-man roster. While Tommy DeVito was likely to hit the chopping block from the beginning due to a congested quarterback room, the g-men also released some noticeable prospects as we analyze each of the impacts they made as well as the reasons they may have been let go.

  1. Tommy DeVito

To be fair, we all knew this one was coming. Even after a stellar preseason, the name power of his respective QB’s, including 10-time Pro Bowl starter Russell Wilson, hopeful future of the franchise Jaxson Dart, and emergency insurance policy Jameis Winston, was in the end too much to overcome for the young local favorite. DeVito threw bullets all over the field this preseason with a refreshingly clean pocket and third to fourth string opposition to work with; and Giants fans will be invested in the continuation of his story whether or not he joins the practice squad.

  1. Dante ‘Turbo’ Miller

This one hurt a little bit. Initially a long shot to make the roster, the second-year running back shined against backups in the Giants’ first two preseason games against the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets. However, a miscue on special teams last Thursday against the New England Patriots likely damaged his growing stock with coaching and upper management. Big blue fans will question the decision to stick with the experienced but aging Devin Singletary as the team’s RB3, but they would be wise to quickly sign Miller off waivers to the practice squad as he could be a valuable weapon should any of the three starters fall to injuries.

  1. Greg Dulcich

You’d think being your team’s preseason MVP (outside of Dart of course) would guarantee you a roster spot on a team without much talent in your respective position. Alas, the former Denver Bronco didn’t make the cut; even after 7 receptions for 53 yards and three touchdowns across the three-game span. General Manager Joe Schoen and Head Coach Brian Daboll clearly still see something in starting TE Daniel Bellinger that a majority of the fanbase haven’t seen since his productive rookie campaign in 2022, while Thomas Fidone II in contrast deserves a shot after a successful rookie preseason in his own right. Management simply insists on keeping just two TE’s on this roster, while Dulcich at least showed he deserves a chance elsewhere despite an injury-riddled start to his young NFL career.

4. Lil’Jordan Humphrey

This one makes a little bit more sense than the previous two entries. Humphrey was on the receiving end of Jaxson Dart’s first ever touchdown in an NFL uniform against the Bills, but failed to really capitalize in the two contests that followed. The Giants were stacked to the brim with aspiring wide receivers this preseason, and the only head scratcher as far as someone who perhaps should have been cut instead was the still struggling Jalin Hyatt, who as of now remains on the roster.
