Saints Block Last Second Field Goal Attempt as Giants Lose 8th Straight

Copr. Athlon Sports 2024

The Big Blue tank is now in full effect as the Giants fell to the New Orleans Saints this afternoon by a score of 14-11 and now hold the number 2 pick in the draft behind the equally quarterback-starved Las Vegas Raiders as both squads sit at 2-11 on the season.

Offense

It looked like the Giants were actively looking for ways to lose this game today. Quarterback Drew Lock had an abysmal showing in the passing game going just 21/49 for 227 yards and an interception. Ironically, he also led the team in rushing yards with 59 on 5 attempts. Wide Receiver Malik Nabers played valiantly enough on the opportunities he was given, hauling in 5 receptions for 79 yards and an extra one for a two point conversion after a 1-yard Tyrone Tracy Jr. touchdown to bring the game within three points. However, a Giants loss was sealed after a blocked Graham Gano field goal attempt by Saints defensive tackle Bryan Bresee with 11 seconds left to play.

Defense

The New York front seven played their best football in almost two months today, racking up 13 tackles for loss and adding two sacks (one each by Kayvon Thibodeaux and Brian Burns) as Saints quarterback Derek Carr was under heavy fire all day long. Cornerback Tre Hawkins III also hauled in his first career interception in the third quarter to end an 11-game drought for the Giants, who hadn’t picked off a quarterback since week 1 against Minnesota. With most of this defensive unit out with injuries, it was heartwarming to at least see some lesser-known names help stifle the Saints offense despite the end result.

The General Consensus

Brian Daboll isn’t even trying to hide the fact that this team is failing upward anymore. The Giants now have a top two pick in the draft if the season were to end today, and this was the last game on their schedule that seemed somewhat winnable. Scoring only 11 points against the 30th best defense in the NFL is inexcusable regardless. The Giants have gotten worse every year since the Schoen-Daboll regime took over in the Meadowlands, and the one successful year they had back in 2022 was mostly from a roster created by previous general manager Dave Gettleman. If this team doesn’t see significant improvement in 2025 after this year’s self-destruct button has alresdy been pushed, then Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll should be out the door when the Times Square ball drops for 2026.
