Somber Spread Looms Large over Ravens-Giants This Sunday

Copr. USA Today 2024

The Baltimore Ravens will make the trip up I-95 to do battle with the New York Giants this Sunday at 1 p.m. est. The game, if most media outlets are to be believed, is expected to be a blowout with the Giants getting +16 according to ESPN Bet, which is one of the largest spreads of the past decade. It’s hard to make an argument against it, as New York is currently in the midst of one of the worst seasons in the history of their franchise, as they’ve been hopelessly embroiled in an 8-game losing streak and currently hold a 2-11 record which is tied for the worst in the NFL with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Injuries

Quarterback Drew Lock has been labeled as doubtful for Sunday’s game as he’s been dealing with injuries to his heel and elbow, although he may be available as an emergency No. 3 QB. Tommy DeVito will start his second game of the season in place of Lock, as he looks to bounce back from an atrocious performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers back on Nov. 24th in which he sustained an injury to his forearm that has kept him out of action until now.

The Giants have been utterly decimated with injuries this season, and apart from Lock, cornerback Tre Hawkins III (lumbar spine) and standout rookie safety Tyler Nubin (ankle) were added to the team’s injury reserve this week to go along with the 19 other players sitting at home or the sidelines for Big Blue.

Keys to Victory

This is a tough one to map out for the Giants. Their secondary is in shambles due to injury and the lack of a true #1 cornerback to begin with, and the overall morale of this roster may be at an all-time low. The only way this team can bounce back this week is by winning a shootout against Baltimore and the exceptional quarterback-running back duo of Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry. The Ravens currently hold the NFL’s worst pass defense (264.9 ypg) and oddly enough its best rush defense (82.7 ypg) so the answer is quite simple: Tommy DeVito needs to air it out. Rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers, while having an underwhelming first season campaign based off of his draft stock (not really his fault), has still been playing well despite the seemingly endless QB drama in the Meadowlands. The talented youngster is well overdue for another touchdown, being held out of the end zone since week 3 against Cleveland. If there was ever a time for Nabers to catch his first touchdown in MetLife Stadium, it would be this Sunday as the Giants face a Herculean task going against one of the league’s most consistently successful franchises.
