The New York Giants defeated the Seattle Seahawks today by a score of 29-20 at Lumen Field. The Giants looked superb today on offense and satisfactory on defense as Daniel Jones continued to demonstrate the benefits of solid offensive line play as he finished the day 23/34 with two touchdowns and zero interceptions. The Giants defense, although concerning at times by way of allowing some big plays in crucial situations, shined statistically, sacking Seattle QB Geno Smith seven times and forcing a massive D.K. Metcalf fumble which resulted in an offensive TD on the following drive by New York.
Offense:
The Giants offense looked complete today. Tyrone Tracy ran like a man with something to prove (which he certainly is) accumulating 129 rushing yards on 18 carries for a smile-inducing average of 7.2 yards per rush. Jones (as previously mentioned) had almost unanimously his best game of 2024 thus far. For the first time in this young man’s career, he’s being protected properly by his offensive line, having long throwing windows on most passes this game despite being sacked 3 times. No one was a larger beneficiary of Jones’s throwing prowess than Darius Slayton, who racked up 122 receiving yards and a TD off of a 30-yard strike from Jones after a week swirling with rumors of a trade to Kansas City, but this game may have saved his career in New York, at least for now.
Defense:
Despite a few hiccups, including allowing an improbable late 2nd quarter game-tying field goal and almost blowing a late 10 point lead, the Giants defense made plays when they needed to the most today. Dexter Lawrence in particular had a game-ball worthy performance, putting up 3 sacks on 4 total tackles.
Special Teams:
Despite stellar performances on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, the Giants special teams unit is what won them the game. Greg Joseph continued his impressive run in a Giants uniform by going 3/3 on field goal attempts and 2/2 on extra points for an 11-point contribution. The biggest play of the game also came down to superb special teams performances by the G-Men, with a blocked Jordan Myers field goal attempt by Isaiah Simmons leading to a “kick-six” return by Bryce Ford-Wheaton which put the Giants up 29-20 with under a minute remaining to seal the victory.
Key Notes:
This is a win that the Giants need to build on as they fly back home to East Rutherford for a Week 6 meeting with the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday Night Football. This will be Joe Burrow’s first ever game vs. the Giants, as he was injured the last time these teams played in the regular season back in 2020. The Giants young but struggling secondary will have a huge test to face in defending wide receivers Ja’Maar Chase and Tee Higgins as Jones and the offense look to have another breakout outing with Tracy’s continuing development and of course star WR Malik Nabers expected return to the lineup.
