It was never even close. The New York Giants defeated the Miami Dolphins by a score of 26-3 on Saturday afternoon in an outstanding showcase of Big Blue’s talented depth.
The contest was essentially over by halftime as quarterback Jameis Winston looked as efficient as he ever has in a masterclass of signal calling in the first half. Before being relieved of his duties at halftime, Winston went 15 of 21 passing for 150 yards and two total touchdowns (one passing and one rushing). Winston has proven to be one of the league’s most reliable backups in recent years, and he showed this past weekend that he’s prepared to step in and play well at any point for Jaxson Dart if necessary.
Defensively, the Giants’ run defense looked utterly unrecognizable from the unorganized, clumsy unit that we saw last week against Minnesota. The G-men allowed a mere 50 rushing yards on 18 total carries from Miami; with 27 of those yards coming from QB scrambles by Cam Miller and Mark Gronowski. Although this game mostly consisted of second and third string talent on both sides, it’s clear that Giants head coach John Harbaugh prioritized run defense efficiency after this week at practice.

Veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. had a mixed bag of a day against one of his former teams. Beckham finished the day with two receptions for 17 yards, one of which included a spectacular juke move for a 12-yard gain and a first down at the expense of Dolphins cornerback Ethan Bonner which reminded nostalgic Giants fans of the OBJ of old. However, Beckham also dropped a contested, but still catchable by pro standards, would-be touchdown reception later on the same drive that may have all but guaranteed him a spot on the final 53-man roster. Beckham will hope to have another serviceable performance against the Jets on Friday night in the final preseason game of the year to survive the last round of cuts; although he isn’t out of the water this week. His fellow wideout Ryan Miller was released earlier today however, so it would appear that Beckham still has strong odds to make the cutoff.
Running back Tyrone Tracy Jr.’s woes from last week unfortunately carried over into Saturday. Although the third-year back looked stronger running the ball, rushing for 29 yards on six carries, he also committed a turnover in the Miami red zone in the first quarter. This, along with his highly publicized failed block attempt against Minnesota, have called his consistency as a player into question. Meanwhile, teammate Devin Singletary continued to make his case for the RB2 position with another strong showing, running for 40 yards on 8 carries including a 13-yard touchdown to extend New York’s lead to 17-0 in the second quarter.

The Big Blue defense was completely dominant from start to finish. Overall, the Giants only allowed 102 total offensive yards from the Dolphins and only three first downs over four quarters of textbook play, smothering both the air and ground game throughout the contest. Linebacker Caeb Murphy led the way with two solo tackles and four in total.
