An immense amount of criticism was targeted at New York Giants owner John Mara and MetLife Stadium President Ron VanDeVeen this week after New York’s star wide receiver Malik Nabers tore his ACL on a non-contact play during Big Blue’s big win over the previously undefeated Los Angeles Chargers. Nabers was carted off the field in apparently agonizing pain during the second quarter of the contest and an MRI on Monday confirmed the ACL diagnosis.

This isn’t the first time that the MetLife ‘Turf Monster’ has taken out a top wide receiver for the G-Men, as back in 2017 Odell Beckham Jr. suffered a season ending ankle injury ironically also in a game against the Chargers; although there was more contact involved during the play that took him out. Regardless, Beckham took to social media to discuss his frustrations with the playing surface in East Rutherford and across the country:
Metlife Stadium has been using turf for football games for both the Giants and Jets since its opening back in 2010. After heavy backlash over the use of UBU Speed S5-M turf used up until 2023, Metlife switched over to the supposedly safer FieldTurf Core HD. However, Nabers is the first major superstar in New York to be taken out by this new surface, which has deservedly re-opened the debate regarding turf’s necessity and safety as a viable playing surface in an already dangerous game.
With the FIFA World Cup being played in the stadium less than a year from now (a contest which will be played on natural grass as all FIFA regulated games are), it begs the question from many fans just how much league owners and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell truly do care about their own player’s safety.
