The New York Giants were defeated in their home opener last night by the Kansas City Chiefs by a final score of 22-9 to fall to 0-3 on the season for the first time since 2021. Where do we even begin without sounding like Edgar Allen Poe at this point? In a game where the Chiefs were expected by many to dominate, the Giants were kept alive for a majority of this contest by the opposition shooting themselves in the foot on more than one occasion. Russell Wilson unfortunately looked much more like his week 1 self than the explosive gunslinger we saw torch the Cowboys secondary in week 2, and it almost certainly cost the Giants the game. With a full day to gain perspective on the loss, we at Giants Fare have decided to turn to one of our favorite postgame recap formats: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Let’s dive in.
The Good:
Cam Skattebo, that’s it.

The rookie running back out of Arizona State has been improving week after week early on, and it continued last night. Skattebo recorded over 60 yards each as a runner and receiver, scoring his second touchdown in as many weeks on a tough 13 yard burst. Skattebo is quickly becoming the cowbell back the Giants community was hoping he would become, and as long as he stays healthy, which may be difficult considering his aggressive running style, he might be the second consecutive New York RB to record a 1,000 yard season after Tyrone Tracy Jr., who finds himself on the shelf for ‘multiple games’ after dislocating his shoulder last night in the first quarter.
The Bad:

Say what you want about Brian Daboll, and we absolutely will and have, but the Giants defensive coordinator might be the worst DC in the NFL at the moment and his unfathomable ability to not realize what he has is quite frankly astonishing. General manager Joe Schoen has done everything in his power to build up the best defense possible in New York and on paper he’s succeeded with flying colors. The simple problem is that they have to get handed off to Bowen immediately after getting signed and/or drafted by this organization. His soft, conservative zone defense has all but destroyed the confidence and perhaps the career of Deonte Banks, who was flourishing in his rookie season under former DC Wink Martindale, not to mention his refusal to blitz despite holding one of the best front sevens in the NFL in the palm of his hand which is utterly inexcusable. Through three weeks, the Giants have only forced one turnover and haven’t accumulated more than a handful of sacks in any of those contests. Granted, yesterday wasn’t a horrible outing by this group, only allowing 22 points and 306 yards of Chiefs offense (the least allowed by Big Blue this season) but they gave up big plays when they mattered most, especially Tyler Nubin, who as of yesterday is still experiencing a sophomore slump reminiscent of Banks. Biased or not, the results speak for themselves, Bowen needs to be ousted from New York as soon as possible.
The Ugly:

We really wanted to believe week 2 would be closer to what we should expect for the year. Not that we’d expect anyone to throw for over 400 yards every week, but simply competent quarterback play on a regular basis, which has eluded this once proud franchise for far too long. Wilson came away from this game looking like an utter shell of the man who made 10 pro bowls and captured a Lombardi Trophy during his time in Seattle, finishing with a line of 18/32 for 160 yards and 2 interceptions. This included a redzone campaign that saw multiple throws out of bounds, one of which was ruled intentional grounding, and a designed run for the 36 year-old signal caller which all added up to a turnover on downs for New York while a deafening chorus of boos could be heard by the MetLife crowd in the background. Wilson looks afraid to play behind an offensive line he clearly doesn’t trust. His quick, wobbly, often inaccurate passes, most of which are almost always checkdowns, have been a clear indication of that. In the interest of protecting Jaxson Dart but giving the fans a form of football that resembles entertainment, the Giants might want to consider starting Jameis Winston at QB next week, as Daboll said when asked who will get the nod that they will ‘review the tape.’

Week 3 is now in the books and this team continues coating itself in the stench of failure it’s become accustomed to over the last two seasons. Multiple sources indicate that big names on this team including star nose tackle Dexter Lawrence and wide receiver Malik Nabers have become frustrated with the team’s lack of success, and who can blame them? New York has lost 14 of its last 15 games dating back to early last season, and it would seem the only way to fix this supposedly talented roster would be to rip out almost the entire coaching staff root and stem. Daboll and Bowen are the most likely to be first on the chopping block if that were to happen. If expectations aren’t met soon, an implosion within management could happen in a matter of weeks.
