Quarterback Jameis Winston has signed with the New York Giants on a two-year $16 million deal as of this past Friday. The move has been viewed as controversial within the Giants community, as the former first overall pick in 2015 was not viewed as a top priority at quarterback for the G-Men in 2025. However, the move may set the Giants up for some entertaining contests in this upcoming year, as Winston threw for over 290 yards per game last season with the Cleveland Browns despite a 13-12 touchdown to interception ratio. The relatively low price of the deal despite Winston’s mini renaissance in Cleveland can also be viewed as a minor bonus.

Winston has been the poster boy for inconsistency in the NFL since his infamous 2019 season, where he threw for 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in his final season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before being replaced by Tom Brady in 2020. Winston then limited his turnovers during a four year tenure with the Saints, throwing 20 touchdowns to only 11 interceptions over that span.

Speculation began to grow that Winston would be willing to sign with the Giants during Super Bowl week this past season, when ex-Giant Saquon Barkley jokingly stated that the Giants were “looking for a quarterback” during an interview with the Eagles running back. Following the interaction, Winston claimed that he would “love” to play for the Giants over the following weeks.

Many fans have shown disappointment in Giants general manager Joe Schoen following the move. Schoen was wise to bolster the Giants depleted secondary as well as improve the team’s already stout front 7 on defense, but has also drawn criticism for his lack of urgency in making moves to improve Big Blue’s talent-starved offense. This is Schoen’s first note-worthy move on that side of the football thus far, and at the very least it’s an improvement on last year’s QB situation, although that’s not saying much. Members of the Big Blue faithful have also claimed that at the very least, the offensive product may be more exciting to watch when considering Winston’s ability to win or (mostly) lose in spectacular fashion; due in no small part to his reckless gunslinging style.
His signing also draws more questions than answers. Will the Giants still pursue another quarterback in the offseason? Are they still planning on snagging one in the draft? How many meme-worthy moments will Winston create during his tenure in East Rutherford? WIth the draft exactly one month away as of writing, we hope to peel away to the core of what the Giants will look like to start the 2025 season and find answers to some of those FAQ’s.
