Eagles drub Giants 28-3
Copr. Eagles Wire – USA Today 2024
Saquon Barkley couldn’t have asked for a better return to Metlife Stadium, as he ran for 176 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown in Philadelphia’s 25-point victory over New York. Jalen Hurts also ran wild in East Rutherford, passing for 114 yards and a touchdown to A.J. Brown but also adding two ‘tush push’ touchdowns on the ground.
The Giants appeared to have the wheels fall off this afternoon. In their first game the rest of the way without star left tackle Andrew Thomas, the Eagles defense had no issue smothering Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, with the Eagles defense racking up 8 sacks. The Giants defense also may have suffered another massive loss this afternoon depending on the status of defensive end Brian Burns, who left the game in the third quarter (under his own power, thankfully) with an apparent lower body injury.

Offense
Back to square one. A major concern of this franchise for almost a decade has been to drag them out of their offensive line woes, and yet time and time again their efforts have always encountered a massive roadblock in some fashion. With Thomas gone, the Giants had no answer for an above average Eagles defense, surrendering the most sacks they’ve allowed all season and forcing Jones into off-balance throws all afternoon. The Tyrone Tracy experiment also hit a bump in the road, as the rookie ran for a mere 23 yards on only 6 carries. The road doesn’t get any easier from here, as next week this unit will have to contend with a Pittsburgh Steelers defense that is ranked 2nd in the NFL in points allowed.

Defense
Despite a hot start in the first quarter, things began to fall apart at the seams once Barkley got moving on the ground. The lone bright spot of the whole game came through four early sacks for New York, who continue to lead the league in said category. One could also say that the Giants defended Philadelphia well enough in the passing game, but then again, the Eagles weren’t really forced into trying to establish a passing attack. Brian Burns’s injury will have rumors swirling throughout the week as we await updates.
The General Consensus
The Giants might actually benefit from a road game considering the performances they’ve had in East Rutherford in recent weeks. Jones has now gone a mind boggling 658 days without a passing touchdown in MetLife Stadium while as a whole, the Giants have only scored 31 points at home with a mere six of those being a result of a trip to the end zone. Drew Lock came in during garbage time in the fourth quarter after a loss appeared inevitable. Inevitability also appears to be heading Jones’s way, as his struggles carried over from last week against Cincinnati. With head coach Brian Daboll’s squad sitting at 2-5 in the cellar of the NFC East, his hot seat also gained a few extra degrees.
