Giants Tie With Commanders Following Mistake-Filled Overtime

Finding adjectives to describe this game is going to be tough. The New York Giants and Washington Commanders failed to crown a victor in the first of their two matchups this season following a 27-27 tie on a rainy day in the nation’s capital.

What began as a tale of two halves quickly turned into a bizarre head scratcher for both sides, but particularly for Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Commanders were running away with this game halfway through the third quarter as Daniels took advantage of a clueless Giants defense on a 38-yard touchdown scramble to give his team a 19-6 lead. The Giants had been plagued all day by porous run defense and kicker Dominic Zvada’s worst game as a pro thus far, as he had missed half of his four field goal attempts to this point in the contest.

Jameis Winston was struggling all throughout the first half, throwing for a mere 72 yards on 16 attempts (4.5 YPA) and losing a fumble in which he was heavily criticized for not falling on top of the ball. During the halftime break, Giants social media was clamoring for backup QB J.J. McCarthy to make his big blue debut, however he was only involved in a small number of packages that mainly required him using his legs. WInston silenced his critics (at least for this week) in the second half however. The 12-year veteran threw for 254 yards on 38 pass attempts and three touchdowns to boot on the back nine to bring New York all the way back from a 27-13 fourth quarter deficit and tie the game at the end of regulation.

After receiving the ball first in overtime, Winston orchestrated a drive that took the g-men all the way down to the Washington 28-yard line before a crucial drop by WR Darnell Mooney on third down halted their advance. Zvada’s struggles then continued at the worst possible time, as he missed his third FG of the day to keep the game tied at 27 all.

After forcing a Washington 3-and-out on their next possession, Big Blue was driving down the field comfortably following back-to-back explosive plays by running back Cam Skattebo and star wideout Malik Nabers which combined for 47 yards. Following the two minute warning, when the Commanders had no timeouts with New York sitting at their opponent’s 24 yard line, Skattebo fumbled the ball in a pivotal moment, removing any chance of a Giants victory.

Following a quick drive down the field for the Commanders which took them down to the NYG 24 yard line, Jayden Daniels simply had to spike the ball with less than 10 seconds left to grant Drew Stevens. Daniels instead opted to try a bizarre play-action pass call to perhaps give Stevens a better shot at the kick (Stevens was 2 for 2 on the day with a long of 40) and was sacked by linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. Daniels failed to spike the ball on the next play in time, and surrendered an all but assured victory for the Commanders.

The General Consensus

This could have been one of the greatest comeback stories of the entire season for the Giants, and an exclamation point on their resiliency following the injury to Jaxson Dart. Instead we as a fanbase are left with an odd feeling of cautious contentness. The good news to emerge out of all of this is that the Giants technically tightened their grip on the NFC East lead as they’re now ahead of the Cowboys and Eagles by 1.5 games and still haven’t lost a game in Dart’s absence. In other words, they now have a free loss in the bank. Winston put on a masterclass in the second half, and somehow still appears to be getting better every week. However, his atrocious start to the game, combined with terrible outings by Zvada and Skattebo, cost New York a winnable game. Nabers and tight end Isaiah Likely has stellar outings in their own right, combining for 22 receptions, 215 receiving yards and all three of New York’s touchdowns.

Big Blue will look to go 4-0 at home for the first time since 2008 next weekend as they take on the recently struggling New Orleans Saints at MetLife Stadium before a much needed bye-week to follow.
